Mitla Cafe
About This Spot
Walking into Mitla Cafe feels like stepping into a cherished neighborhood gathering spot where time moves at its own comfortable rhythm. The dim, warm lighting and the quiet hum of conversations give the space an unhurried, lived-in charm that invites you to settle in and savor more than just a meal—here, you’re sharing a moment rooted deeply in community and tradition.
Since opening its doors in 1937, this family-run Mexican restaurant has quietly weathered the years while preserving a familiarity that locals and visitors alike recognize as a cornerstone of San Bernardino’s Westside. The atmosphere carries a gentle hum of history, seen in the relaxed patience between staff and guests, and felt in the way the flavors seem to echo stories from decades past.
The experience at Mitla Cafe is unpretentious and genuine. The basket of chips and salsa served upon arrival acts as a small welcome ritual, setting the tone for the comforting, home-style dishes that arrive soon after—whether you lean toward hearty enchiladas, classic tacos, or savory chiles rellenos. Drinks, from tangy margaritas to carefully crafted Bloody Marys, complement the food without rushing the moment, encouraging quiet conversations and easy smiles.
Part of what makes Mitla Cafe special is its subtle invitation to slow down and connect: with the food, with the people at your table, and with the countless others who have passed through its doors over the decades. The friendly waves from kitchen staff, the shared stories across tables, and the trustworthy flavors all come together to create a place that feels like a well-kept secret worth seeking out again and again.

Really great food. I will always recommend their ground beef tacos. Apparently they are the ones that inspired taco bell! However the service could use some improvement as it was a little slow. Thats why I am rating 4 stars. Otherwise I highly recommend Mitla Cafe.

Very tasty authentic Mexican food. Loved it here. Had the "original" taco, beans and rice, cheese enchilada. It was very good, I would go back again! Some negatives are: on the Sunday I went I waited about 15 minutes to sit at 1pm. Dim lighting.

Went on a Sunday around 11:00 am. Waited about 20 mins for a table, understandable. The chips and salsa were great. I ordered their pork fries. The flavor was meh, the fries aren’t crispy so they are really soggy. The pork sauce was red instead of green. Their hard shell tacos are really good. My son got their cheeseburger and said it was amazing, i had a bite and it was really good.

Rendezvous Back to Route 66 Downtown San Bernardino, California Mitla Cafe was founded in 1937, has been family-owned and operated for four generations, maintaining its legacy Mitla Cafe remains a constant, community staple on the Westside of San Bernardino, serving celebrities, local dignitaries, politicians, and people from all walks of life. Inspired Taco Bell founder Glen Bell who was a regular customer at Mitla Cafe and learned techniques for making hard-shell tacos there, which directly influenced his fast-food chain.

5 Stars, Well deserved. Friendly. When I come in to pick up food. The ladies that work in the kitchen wave and say hi. Always accommodating me and my balance issue, helping me carry my box to my car. Great food, prices, jute box, great drink prices. Safe atmosphere. My favorite Resturant.

Came here after watching a documentary on Netflix. Taco Bell's idea of crunchy taco came from this place. We ordered the combination plate which has a crunchy taco, a tostada, rice and beans. It came with a cup of soup. The soup was called cocido. The soup was great. It had a beef chunk celery, zucchini and carrots. The chips and salsa served were delicious. The ground beef taco from my order was good. Nothing special in my opinion. The tostada was good too. Nothing special in my opinion once again. I personally like the soup and chips and salsa better. I would come again.
